As far as steel toe goes, that's really a matter of controversy. A steel toe will protect you if something slightly heavy falls on your foot. However, if something really heavy falls on your foot, your steel toe cuts your toes right off. I do not know anyone personally that this has happened too... But its what I heard through the grape vine when I bought my lovely cats all those years ago. Good luck, I hope you find a wonderful pair of boots that you love!
